Transmission

The majority of today’s vehicles are equipped with either automatic or continuously variable transmissions. Automatic transmissions have torque converters that link the engine with the transmission. The components include a central gear around which other gears rotate. The gears are shifted, small brakes and clutches which gears are chosen to move. The latest versions of automatic transmission may contain up to 10 speeds.

A continuously variable or CVT transmission provides virtually an unlimited number of gear ratios. The system uses a pulley-and-belt mechanism that replaces conventional gears. The engine turns one pulley and another links the wheels and the transmission. The pulley diameter adjusts to change the power-distribution ratio. The belt moves over cones. The changing diameter of the cones moves the belt and replaces the gears. The shifting from one position to another occurs automatically.
