Good Samaritan Tips: Jump Start a Stranded Motorist

At Mangino Chevrolet, we think everyone should know to use their jumper cables to start a dead battery. If you encounter another driver in Amsterdam, NY who needs assistance, this knowledge can be a big help. Your battery must have, at minimum, as much voltage as the dead battery.

You’ll need to turn your car off and place both vehicles in neutral or park with your parking brakes on. The red clips on each end of the cables should be attached to the positive battery terminals. One black clip should be attached to your negative terminal, and the other should be attached to unpainted metal on the other car.

You should let your car run for a few minutes, and the other person should try to start theirs. The other person then needs to drive around for at least 15 minutes to recharge their battery.
